We have heard from scores of people frustrated and furious because neighbor's cats hop the fence and dig up flower and vegetable beds, and leave behind their smelly poopy calling card. And we agree, this is not nice. No one wants to clean up cat poop from their garden. No one wants the smells either. And as you know from reading the rest of our website - the number one trigger for why our indoor cats pee outside of the box is the smells of outside cat's urine and feces.
But how do we keep cats out or deal with it in a manner that's humane and easy?
We've looked at several products which use water or sound waves to keep cats out. We tested one product but rejected it because it stopped working. There is another product we are seriously considering offering for sale, but we are still testing it. We will not sell you something which does not meet our finicky standards.
In the meantime we consulted with Mary Ann Buxton, Director of the Feral Cat Program for the San Francisco SPCA. This is what Mary Ann does and we think its a brilliant solution. Its also a solution that Cat Faeries loves because takes in account that we are sharing this planet with other species. We are not superior, and our needs do not over ride theirs. All species need to live in harmony with each other.
Mary Ann has created a special wood planter box which is filled with a mix of gravel and loose dirt. This outdoor litter box is for any cats who enter her garden, and this includes the local feral cats or cats belonging to clueless neighbors. She placed it in a corner of her garden which is protected from wind and rain, and which is also easy for her to access. Every few days she scoops it, and fluffs up the gravel and dirt mixture to keep it fluffy. Rarely does she find cat poop elsewhere in her garden and she finds that the cats don't linger as long as before. They do their business, then leave.
